Making a Keyhole Garden: a Send a Cow's Testimony
"You can make Keyhole Gardens in several ways, depending on the size of your plot and what materials you have available.
First, we cleared the ground of weeds and dug it down.
Then we used string and 2 sticks to mark a circle on the soil.
Long sticks were hammered in a square around the centre.
Large stones were placed on the perimeter, and a short path was made.
More sticks were added and wire wrapped around to form a ‘basket’.
Broken pots were then laid down to form a drainage layer.
Next we filled the basket with layers of cow manure and wood ash.
We compacted the manure at the sides of the basket and filled it up.
Layers of manure, a little ash and soil were then piled on to the garden.
The layers were added from the center outwards to create a slope.
Using the wheelbarrow really helped to get the soil higher up.
It was almost ready for planting!
You can add old carpet or card to the basket to keep it from drying up."
